Reputedly, it is one of the best-preserved bishop’s palaces in the whole of Europe. Located in the Market Town of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, Auckland Castle (as it is now named) served as Palace to the very powerful Prince Bishops of Durham from around 1153 AD for over 800 years. Remodelled throughout the ages, and again recently restored, it now forms the centrepiece to The Auckland Project; it is nowadays a fabulous example of 18th-century Georgian Gothic Architecture, and is without doubt, worthy of your visit.
