IN WINTER'S EMBRACE It is January, and winter has cast a fine snowy veil on this majestic, century-old sycamore tree standing as sentinel high in the “Old Collingwood Field” at Broomside on the outskirts of the much older village of the historic village of Coundon, situated just one mile from Bishop Auckland in County Durham. An original coal mine and Grade II Listed Norman Church date back to the twelfth century here, with human settlement traced back to the Bronze Age. Historians reveal that Coundon was once known as Cuna-dun meaning "cows on the hill" where they (the cows) were watched (from a distance) from Auckland Castle (previously The Palace of the Prince Bishops) by powerful churchmen who once ruled from their lofty palace. The Prince Bishops and the coal mines have long since vanished, but the Old Sycamore Tree still stands, ever watchful, a testament to the passage of time, and in the wintery months, a presence transformed by Winter’s Glistening Snowy Spell.
